The House rejected Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-Mich.) measure targeting the U.S. military intervention in Lebanon.

Tlaib’s measure failed Tuesday by a bipartisan vote of 189 to 225, with 22 Democrats joining nearly all Republicans in opposing it.

The resolution would specifically prohibit U.S. forces from engaging in “any hostilities” in the country, even though the U.S. military does not participate in Israel’s war in Lebanon and conducts very few operations there.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., a leading critic of Israel, was among Republicans who supported the measure.

The team member’s measure was a concurrent resolution that was largely symbolic and would not be sent to President Donald Trump’s desk for a veto if passed.

Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress, is a fierce opponent of Israel and has accused the Jewish state of committing “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza and Lebanon. His harsh criticism of Israel’s war in Lebanon spurred GOP attacks that he was providing protection to Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The decision did not mention the terrorist organization, which has been in military conflict with Israel since the beginning of March after the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran.

Tuesday’s vote comes after Tlaib previously pushed for a vote earlier this month on a more comprehensive Lebanon war powers resolution that critics argued would require U.S. military personnel guarding embassy staff to leave the country. Opponents also argued that the measure would restrict any aid to the Lebanese Armed Forces fighting Hezbollah.

Tlaib adapted her second decision to clarify that it exempted the protection of diplomatic personnel and cooperation with the Lebanese military.

Republicans questioned the timing of the decision given that the United States was not at war in Lebanon.

“There are no U.S. combat forces conducting operations or hostilities in Lebanon,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, R-Fla., said during House debate. “They are training the Lebanese Armed Forces.

“Why are they training?” Mast continued. “Because there are probably at least 40,000 – possibly even more – Hezbollah terrorists spread across Southern Lebanon, actively targeting Israel, and have been doing so for many years.”

House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (DY) dissented, saying the resolution would keep the United States “from another indefinite war that is contrary to our national interest.”
