House Republican urges Senate to restore talking filibuster rules

As I travel through South Carolina, whether I’m meeting business owners, farmers, veterans, or families at community events, I keep hearing the same question: “Congressman, if Republicans keep winning elections, why does it seem so hard to get things done in Washington?”
That’s a fair question, and frankly, one that Republicans need to answer. The American people understand elections and they understand mandates. What they don’t understand is why Republicans won the White House and majorities in both houses of Congress but still struggle to enact the agenda they promised voters. This is not just a political problem; This is a management issue.
The American people returned President Donald Trump to the White House with a clear mandate to secure the border, restore fiscal discipline, unleash American energy, and put America first. They didn’t elect Republicans to spend the next four years explaining why Washington can’t keep its promises; They chose us to produce results.

That’s why I proudly voted for the “Save America Act” when it was introduced in the House of Representatives. House Republicans debated, voted in favor and passed the legislation. We have done our job and the responsibility has now passed to the United States Senate. The House has shown what’s possible when Republicans are willing to fight for the agenda voters elected us to deliver, and the Senate must reflect that same sense of urgency in its work.

Unfortunately, this is where the American people often lose confidence in what Washington can achieve. Too many bills sponsored by the president and approved by the House get lost in a maze of Senate procedures that few Americans understand and even fewer believe they serve the country.
Conservatives rightly respect the Senate as one of our nation’s greatest institutions. It is designed to encourage debate, protect minority perspectives, and ensure that legislation is carefully considered before it becomes law. These traditions are important and should not be taken lightly. But respecting the Senate does not mean refusing to examine whether its rules still serve the purpose for which they were created.

I have said before that the Senate should consider reinstating the talking filibuster, and I continue to believe it deserves serious consideration. Not because Republicans should be afraid of debate, but because we should insist on it. If senators want to stop legislation sponsored by the President and passed by the House, they should have every opportunity to present their case, but they should do so on the Senate floor, in front of the American people, rather than allowing procedural maneuvering to obscure one of the most important debates before Congress.
This isn’t about weakening the Senate; it’s about restoring responsibility. Americans deserve to know who is standing in the way of legislation and why. Debate has always strengthened our Republic, whereas invisible obstacles have never strengthened.

Trump has made the Save America Act one of his top legislative priorities because he understands a simple truth: Elections only matter if the government is willing to carry out the mandate voters gave it. Republicans should be willing to consider every constitutional option available to ensure that legislation supported by the President, passed by the House of Representatives, and supported by the American people has a fair opportunity to succeed in the Senate.

Republicans have spent years asking the American people for a unified government so we can secure the border, restore American energy, rein in spending, and put America first. If Washington gives us that responsibility and then responds by saying the rules won’t allow us to do that, we shouldn’t be surprised if those same voters are frustrated. Senate rules should protect debate, promote accountability, and strengthen our institutions, but they should never be an excuse for breaking our promises.
The American people are not waiting for Republicans to win elections just to explain why nothing can be done. They expect us to find a way to get the job done. House Republicans did our part. It’s time for Senate Republicans to do their own thing.
