A pilot caused chaos on a flight after the World Cup final when he announced that Argentina had won the tournament.
Footage posted on TikTok shows passengers being told the result of the draw between Argentina and Spain, with many wearing the South American country’s football jerseys.
In the video, the pilot told the travelers: ‘It was a very competitive match until the end, including extra time.
‘Both teams did their best but unfortunately only one team can win the World Cup final.’
He later said: ‘We wanted to congratulate our Argentine friends.’
At this point, cheers and screams erupted in the cabin as Argentinian fans were fooled into thinking they had won the tournament back-to-back in what was believed to be Lionel Messi’s final appearance at the event.
But fans, some wearing Messi jerseys with his number 10 alongside the 2022 gold medal crest, remained silent as the captain continued: ‘Spain won.’
Argentinian media described the captain’s move as a ‘disgusting joke’.

Should pilots be held responsible for pranks that upset passengers during flights?
La Voz del Interior newspaper said: ‘During a flight as the World Cup was reaching its climax, a Spanish captain announced a false result that sparked celebrations among passengers before announcing that Spain were champions.’
Branding his actions as ‘appalling’, another Argentinian news source said: ‘Not only did he commit a terrible act with a questionable sense of humour, but he also exposed himself to serious consequences on the plane when the truth was finally revealed.
‘Passengers might have wanted to confront him or get into the cockpit. ‘A very big mistake.’
The name of the airline and the destination of the plane are not yet known.
Argentina came within minutes of their fourth World Cup win on Sunday but were defeated by Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal and Spain were crowned champions for the second time.
It was Messi’s second World Cup final defeat after his country lost 1-0 to Germany in 2014.
After consecutive extra-time knockout wins, Argentina were lucky enough to end their defense of the title they won in Qatar four years ago.
Messi, 39, is unlikely to take part in the next tournament, which will be held in six countries (Morocco, Portugal and Spain) with one-off matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, but he has not yet made a statement about his future.
The Spanish team returned home on Monday and paraded through the streets in an open-top bus to celebrate their first World Cup victory since beating the Netherlands, also after extra time, in South Africa 16 years ago.
