Households in 16 areas of England urged to stockpile items before Monday | Weather | News

Households in some parts of the UK are being asked to stock up on essential supplies for emergencies before Monday after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for several areas in England and Wales.

The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning for rain for 16 areas in England and 16 in Wales, while a further three yellow weather warnings for rain have been issued elsewhere in England, Scotland and Wales.

It warned that heavy rain could cause disruption and homes and businesses could be subject to ‘extensive’ flooding on Monday, December 8.

It also warned of ‘difficult’ driving conditions, loss of power and damage to buildings through flooding. The warning will start at 18:00 on Monday and last until 18:00 on Tuesday.

In its warning, the Met Office said: “Rain will be persistent and heavy from Monday night into Tuesday morning, and while rain may be more intermittent during the daylight hours on Tuesday, occasional heavy rain will also be possible. Naturally there will be some variation in rainfall totals across the region, but accumulations of 20-40mm are likely in many places, with 60-80mm over Dartmoor and the uplands in south Wales.”

“There is a small possibility of 80-100mm falling from the most exposed sloping hills. Given the saturated nature of the ground, this is likely to lead to flooding and disruption to transport in some places. The rain will also be accompanied by a strengthening of winds from the south, which could exacerbate impacts.

Households are asked to stock up on emergency supplies, including a torch, batteries, mobile phone power bank and other essential items.

He adds: “People cope better with power outages when they prepare for them in advance. This is easy to do; consider packing flashlights, batteries, a cell phone power pack and other essential items.”
