Veteran actress and talk show host Simi Garewal shared a clip from her old interview from her superhit talk show Rendezvous with Simi on her social media account on Saturday. In the video, Bollywood’s Dream Girl Hema Malini was telling about her marriage and love story with her husband and Bollywood’s He-Man Dharmendra.

When Simi asked Hema if she met Dharmendra for the first time, the Baghban actress said, “I met him for the first time at the premiere of one of my films. I thought I had never seen such a handsome man in my life. Later, I heard him say the same about me.” Simi also asked Hema if she tried to resist Dharmendra because she knew he was married.

“In the beginning, I didn’t care at all. In some part of my mind, I thought, ‘If I get married, I should marry someone like him. Not him, but someone like him,’ said Hema. “He always said he loved me very much, and I would say, ‘Okay, okay’ without paying much attention, knowing the outcome.”

The gracious host then asked Hema the reason why she finally accepted the relationship. “It was destiny,” Hema said. “We had been together for so long, and suddenly it didn’t feel right to think about marrying someone else. One day I called her and said, ‘You have to marry me now.'” And she said: “‘Yes, I will marry you.’ And that’s how it happened.”

Hema also expressed why Dharmendra always stayed away from his family relationship with his first wife and her family. “I never tried to compete with his other family for their time or attention. In love, you have to give, not demand. When you love a person so much and receive so much love from him, how can you torture him for small, insignificant things?”

The Seeta Aur Geeta actor added, “That’s why I never bothered him, never made him angry, never put pressure on him. I wanted the love to continue. It’s like that today; we love each other so much, nothing can come between us. I understand his problems and I arrange everything accordingly, that’s why he loves me more. When you give a lot, you get a lot. This is love; you have to respect the love you have.”

For those who don’t know the plot, Dharmendra and Hema’s love story is considered one of the most romantic epics. The two top stars of their time met while working together in the early 1970s, and their on-screen chemistry quickly blossomed into a deep personal bond. Despite extreme social judgment and strong opposition from both families, the couple married in 1980. Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and had four children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeeta Deol and Vijayta Deol.

Dharmendra and Hema had two daughters: Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. The rift between the two families seems to continue even after Dharmendra’s death as two separate prayer meetings were held for the late actor – one hosted by Sunny Deol and his family at Taj Lands End in Bandra and the other at Hema’s own home. Hema and her daughters were not there when Dharmendra’s ashes were immersed in the holy Ganga rivers in Haridwar earlier this week.
