The Associated Press reported last week that St. Paul, a Catholic institution in Nigeria, He reported that gunmen kidnapped 303 children and 12 teachers during the attack on St. Mary’s School. Initial reports said that at least 52 children were abducted, with the number subsequently rising to over 200, reaching 303.

No group claimed responsibility for the mass kidnapping. It is the latest in a series of anti-Christian attacks and kidnappings that have shaken the African nation and drawn international attention.

Pope Leo addressed the incident at the end of the mass held in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the abductions of priests, clergy and students in Nigeria and Cameroon. I especially feel great pain for the many young men and women who were abducted and their grieving families.”

The pope added: “I wholeheartedly appeal for the immediate release of the hostages and call on the competent authorities to take appropriate and timely decisions to ensure their release.”

Christian persecution in Nigeria previously led President Donald Trump to declare the West African nation a “country of particular concern.” The Nigerian government objected to this US appointment.

In his Truth Social post in October, Trump stated: “Christianity in Nigeria faces an existential threat. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass murder. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities occur in Nigeria and many other countries. We are ready, willing and able to save our large worldwide Christian population!”

Minaj praised the president for bringing attention to the issue in her X post.

“Many countries in the world are affected by this horror.” [and] Pretending not to notice is dangerous. I thank the president [and] because his team took it seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. “Let’s not forget to lift them up in prayer,” he wrote.

Following her mission, Minaj was invited by US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz to speak at a UN conference addressing religious violence and the killing of Christians in the African country.

“In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes, and killed. Churches have been burned. Families have been torn apart and entire communities live in constant fear simply because of the way they pray,” Minaj said at the US-hosted event in November.

He added: “Sadly, this is a growing problem not only in Nigeria but also in many other countries around the world and requires urgent action. I want to be clear that protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people. It is about uniting humanity.”
