ICE agent shoots Minneapolis man in leg after attack, officials say

ReutersAn Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis, US, where tensions have been high since an ICE agent shot and killed a woman last week.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said federal officers were conducting a “targeted traffic stop” when the Venezuelan citizen was shot after resisting arrest and attacking an officer.
US officials told BBC partner CBS News that the man was shot after an ICE officer was attacked with a shovel.
New clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement near the scene, and city officials called for calm. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the situation was “unsustainable.”
Tensions over immigration enforcement have been high in the city since 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Jan. 7.
His death sparked protests in Minneapolis that spread to many US cities.
DHS said the man who was shot was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and an ICE officer was also hospitalized to be treated for injuries.
The city’s police chief, Brian O’Hara, stated that the latest armed attack led to renewed clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, and that police officers were exposed to fireworks, ice and snowball attacks.
Minneapolis city officials told X: “We understand there is anger. We ask the public to remain calm.”
“The City of Minneapolis once again demands that ICE leave the city and state immediately,” they added.
In response to Wednesday’s incident, DHS said in a statement that the man got out of his car and an argument ensued between him and an ICE officer. It was claimed that two more people came out of a nearby apartment during the incident and “attacked” the police officer.
In the DHS statement, it was stated that “Fearing for his life and safety as he was ambushed by three people, the police officer opened fire for defensive purposes” and stated that “both attackers are in custody.”
The BBC was not immediately able to independently verify the details in the statements. O’Hara said the FBI is investigating the incident.
In response to the latest ICE attack, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey accused federal officers of “creating chaos” across the state.
Nearly 3,000 federal officers have been deployed to Minnesota in recent weeks.
Authorities have offered varying accounts of the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good; While the Trump administration claimed the ICE agent acted in self-defense, local officials said the woman posed no danger.
Videos of the incident show ICE agents approaching a car in the middle of the street. While the vehicle was trying to escape, one of the people in the front of the vehicle pointed his gun at the driver and fired three shots. The FBI is investigating the incident.
Minneapolis city leaders said Good was at the scene as a legal observer of ICE activities, a volunteer monitoring police and law enforcement at protests and operations.
Good’s mother told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was “not a part of anything” that involved challenging ICE agents.
But White House officials, including President Donald Trump, said Good was not just observing but also interfering with the officers’ work.
The fundraiser for Good’s widow and family raised more than $1.4 million.
Responding to reports that ICE shot the man in the leg, Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Blanche said in a statement about
Shortly before news of the latest shooting emerged, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was calling on Trump to end the “occupation” of ICE officers in the state in a video posted on social media.
“Furious is not a strong enough word,” Walz said during his speech.
