The iconic vinyl store will close after 48 years, with its owners admitting that their once “small business has grown into something bigger than we could have ever imagined.” The store was known for its rainbow-colored walls and large painted sign with Jimi Hendrix’s face.
On Monday (June 8), Electric Ladyland confirmed the site would close permanently at the end of the month, with bosses announcing the news on social media. The store opened in 1978 and sold a variety of items, including vinyl records, tapestries, local artwork, and oddities. The store’s display featured a large sign of the legendary Jimi Hendrix, considered the most influential electric guitarist in rock history.
As reported by SunThe store, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, will close at the end of June. Bosses confirmed the news on social media and thanked customers for their support over the years.
They said on social media: “What started as a small thing business It has turned into something much bigger than we could have ever imagined. Electric Ladyland has become a place of connection, creativity, self-expression and community.
“In changing times, generations of customers have walked through our doors, shared their stories, discovered something new and become part of our family.
“Thank you to every customer who shopped with us, every friend who supported us, every employee who helped shape our journey, and every member of this community who believed in us. Your loyalty, kindness, and courage mean more than words can.”
After opening in 1978, the vinyl retailer described itself as Louisville’s oldest “hippie store.” It was loved for selling a range of products, including records, artwork and tapestries.
The store’s website reads: “We are an eccentric store dedicated to Good music and fun oddities! Come and check us out to get a first-hand experience of our walls covered in local art and our good music selection!”
He adds: “We are your one-stop ‘Hippie Shop’. We are committed to providing our customers with high-quality, affordable products! We support many local artists and host a wide selection of products made by them!”
