Deliveroo names its most popular dishes and food with surprise winner

An independent London-based bagel shop has become known globally for its signature ‘Classic Bagel’, which is Deliveroo’s most ordered product globally.
Family-owned and operated Papo’s Bagels, founded by husband-and-wife duo Georgia Fenwick-Gomez and Gabe “Papo” Gomez, beat out major restaurant chains to secure the top spot.
The popular “Classic” offering of smoked salmon, cream cheese, sliced red onion, tomato and capers has become the most frequently ordered takeaway on the platform this year.
What started as a home delivery service during lockdown has since grown into a commercial kitchen operation, with queues now forming daily at its brick-and-mortar store in Dalston.
Expressing their delight, Papo’s Bagels said: “It’s a crazy honor to win Deliveroo’s favorite meal of the year.
“We had a simple desire to bring a taste of New York City to London, and The Classic is a classic for a reason. Thank you!”
Deliveroo said the bagel shop’s success “underlines how authentic locally run businesses are capturing a nation’s appetite and love for new and trendy dishes.”
Reading burger joint 7Bone’s Dirty Meal Deal was the UK’s second most popular order, followed by London sandwich shop Crunch’s Ultimate Combo.
But it wasn’t just takeaways that made the top 10 delivery list; Jason’s Sourdough bread from Morrisons in Manchester and blueberries from the Co-op in London reached fourth and ninth place respectively.
Each year, the report lists the most popular and fastest-rising delivery trends across nine global markets, including the UK.
Last year’s fourth place was taken by Waitrose’s whole cucumber, while the same product was ranked 14th on the list, followed by Warburtons pancakes from Asda Express in Leeds in 16th place.
Sliced gherkins also ranked 22nd on the long list.
Valentine’s Day week was Deliveroo’s busiest week for jewellery, but customers also turned to the platform for comfort and relaxation in extreme weather conditions; Fan sales peaked during the week of July 7 as the UK suffered from a heatwave.
Jeff Wemyss, vice president of regional growth at Deliveroo, said: “Celebrating our ninth anniversary, the Deliveroo 100 is more than a list – it is a definitive snapshot of global desire and consumer habits.
“This year’s list clearly demonstrates the strong connection between communities and beloved independent restaurants that sit proudly alongside our favorite chains.”
