IMD weather alert: Yellow warning for Himalayan states and heavy rain forecast for Kerala as monsoon strengthens
Western disturbance triggers unstable conditions in Himalayan region
A strong westerly disturbance moving across northern India created unstable weather conditions over the western Himalayas. Satellite images from INSAT-3DS show large spiral-shaped cloud formations spread over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Meteorologists said dense cloud bands over the region indicate strong storm clouds are developing that could produce heavy rain, lightning, strong winds and isolated hailstorms. The system is influenced by the interaction between the western disturbance and warm pre-monsoon air over northern India, leading to sudden and intense weather activity.
IMD issues rain warnings for Himalayan states
In view of the evolving conditions, IMD has issued a yellow alert for rain, storms and strong winds in many states of the Himalaya. The agency warned that unstable weather conditions will continue in the coming days as the system progresses.
Heavy rain warning issued for Kerala as monsoon rains strengthen
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is rapidly moving towards Kerala and IMD predicts an early onset around May 26. The weather office also predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state between May 28 and June 3.
Heavy rains and strong winds affected various parts of Kerala on Sunday, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert in Ernakulam district. Yellow alert has been issued for 11 districts except Palakkad and Wayanad.
The orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm, while the yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
Weather impacts reported in Kerala
Strong winds accompanying the rain caused minor damage in some areas. A large tree branch fell on a moving car in Thrissur, breaking its windshield. It was stated that there were no injuries in the incident.
IMD continues to monitor the evolving conditions as both the monsoon system and western disturbances affect weather patterns across the country.
