India hands over personal watercraft to Sri Lanka

India has transferred two personal watercraft (PWCs) to Sri Lanka to further enhance the Sri Lanka Coast Guard’s near-shore Search and Rescue capabilities, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said on Sunday.

A post on X stated that the Defense Advisor handed over two PWCs along with safety equipment to the Director of Operations at SLCG Headquarters in Mirissa.

India’s naval ship INS Nireekshak has arrived in Colombo to participate in the fourth edition of the India-Sri Lanka bilateral diving exercise IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, scheduled to be held from 21 April to 27 April.

INS Nireekshak arrived in the island nation on April 21, according to an official statement by the Ministry of Defense on Wednesday.

The week-long exercise will bring together diving teams from the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy to conduct a series of specialized underwater operations and training exercises. The initiative aims to increase interoperability, strengthen coordination and facilitate the exchange of best practices between the two navies.

On arrival, INS Nireekshak was ceremoniously welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy, complete with a naval band reception.

Cdr Sailesh Tyagi, Commanding Officer, INS Nireekshak, held discussions with Sri Lanka’s Flag Officer Commanding, Western Maritime Zone, Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, on issues of mutual interest and avenues for deeper cooperation.

Beyond operational interactions, the visit will also include social interactions, sporting events and joint yoga sessions designed to foster friendship and goodwill between the personnel of both navies.

As part of India’s humanitarian outreach, the ship will also deliver two BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri) cubes to Sri Lankan authorities under the government’s Aarogya Maitri initiative. These portable medical units are equipped to handle up to 200 emergency cases and come with essential medications and basic surgical capabilities, according to the release.

As the next step towards strengthening maritime security cooperation, the Indian Navy will provide 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition to the Sri Lankan Navy.

The IN-SLN DIVEX exercise underlines the deep-rooted maritime partnership between the two countries and reflects their shared commitment to ensuring stability and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region. This commitment is in line with India’s MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Integral Progress for Security and Growth across Regions), which aims to promote collective growth and regional security.
