India, New Zealand elevate ties to strategic partnership; launch 2030 roadmap

Following the talks, the two sides announced 18 key outcomes, including 10 memorandums of understanding and agreements, such as provision of mutual logistics support between the Indian Navy and the New Zealand Defense Force, as well as a roadmap to 2030, which aims to guide the structural implementation of strategic partnership among relevant ministries and stakeholders over the next four years.
Prime Minister Modi said the defense partnership has entered a new phase with agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation across the Indo-Pacific. “Our growing cooperation in defense and security is a symbol of our deep strategic trust. A strong structure for our cooperation was created with the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed last year. Today, we agreed on a framework for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific,” Luxon said at the luncheon in his honor. he said. “Mutual coordination between us will increase through bilateral naval exercises, logistics support and cooperation in the field of hydrography.”
Other important results included the establishment of a joint working group on counter-terrorism and the regulation on the establishment of a maritime security dialogue. New Zealand has also nominated maritime security as a priority pillar under India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
The Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation establishes a framework for enhanced maritime cooperation through dialogue, coordination, exchange of information and joint activities in the Indo-Pacific. The maritime security dialogue will strengthen cooperation, coordination and exchange of information as both sides seek to create stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Addressing the Indian community in Auckland as he wrapped up his three-nation tour, the Prime Minister said the relationship between India and New Zealand is built on friendship, shared values and mutual commitment towards a stronger future. Drawing on New Zealand’s cultural heritage, he emphasized the importance of the word ‘Waka’, which has symbolized bringing people together for centuries. Modi said Waka is not just a boat but a symbol of a common journey. He added that India-New Zealand Waka is now ready to embark on a new journey together, reflecting the growing partnership between the two countries.
