India-US reschedule key meeting on interim trade deal as negotiations continue | India News

India and the US have postponed their meetings on an interim trade deal that would have allowed both sides to assess the impact of the recent US Supreme Court decision that overturned the Trump administration’s tariff decisions.

Earlier, India and the US had planned a three-day meeting led by top trade negotiators in Washington on February 23 to finalize a bilateral trade deal.

A senior official confirmed that the Indian team’s visit has now been postponed, allowing both sides to review the implications of the US Supreme Court’s latest decision. They will soon choose a new date that suits everyone.

US President Donald Trump raised global tariffs from 10 percent to 15 percent on Saturday, following a major setback at the Supreme Court on Friday.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Based on a detailed, detailed and complete review of the ridiculous, poorly written and extraordinarily un-American decision on Tariffs issued yesterday by the Supreme Court of the United States after months of deliberation, please allow this statement to represent that I, as President of the United States, will increase, effective immediately, the 10% World Tariffs on Countries, many of which have “exploited” the United States for decades with no retribution (until I show up!), completely permissible and legally tested.” “To the 15% level.”

The United States Supreme Court on Friday struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariff measures, ruling that the executive branch exceeded its constitutional authority in using emergency powers to impose broad import tariffs.

In a decisive 6-3 decision, U.S. Supreme Court justices ruled that President Trump’s aggressive strategy of imposing high tariffs on a wide range of products imported into the United States from countries around the world was not legally authorized under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, commonly known as IEEPA.

This landmark decision effectively nullifies most, if not all, of the tariffs enacted during the Trump administration.

An angry President Trump immediately called the decision a “disgrace” after learning about it in a meeting with governors and assured everyone that he already had a solid backup plan to handle the situation.

On Saturday, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi stated that India will carefully examine the US Supreme Court’s recent order striking down various Trump-era tariffs before responding officially.

Speaking to reporters, Joshi noted that he had seen the news in the media about the decision and emphasized that any official reaction would come from the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not from him.

The Ministry of Commerce acknowledged yesterday’s tariff decision of the US Supreme Court, followed by US President Trump’s press conference and the new steps of the US Administration, and said that they “reviewed all these developments to evaluate their consequences”.
