India is set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The environmentally friendly train will carry 2,500 passengers.
India’s first hydrogen-powered train will soon operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. This green initiative aims to replace diesel-powered trains and reflects India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while modernizing its railway network.
Green hydrogen plant powers train
A dedicated green hydrogen plant has been established in Jind to power the hydrogen-powered locomotive. This facility is currently India’s largest hydrogen facility with a storage capacity of 3,000 kilograms. The facility was built specifically for this railway project and is currently in the final stages.
Haryana government has provided uninterruptible 11 kV power supply. State Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi recently reviewed power arrangements with officials from Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN).
Faster, cleaner travel on the Jind-Sonipat route
The hydrogen-powered train will cover the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route, reducing travel time significantly. Officials said the train is expected to complete its journey in about an hour, moving at speeds between 110 and 140 km per hour. Currently, diesel trains take about two hours on the same route.
Six stations are located on this route, making this service accessible to a large number of daily commuters. The train, which will have a passenger capacity of approximately 2,500 people, will offer a modern and efficient alternative to existing services.
affordable prices
Ticket prices for the hydrogen train are expected to range from Rs 5 to Rs 25, making the train an affordable option for passengers. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 89 crore, the train represents a significant investment in clean mobility.
