IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, who had led the airline as CEO since September 6, 2022, resigned on Tuesday (March 10), months after a major disruption to IndiGo operations that led to mass cancellations and triggered widespread public outrage. Co-Founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will head IndiGo’s business on an interim basis until a new person is appointed, which the airline said is expected shortly.
Full statement from IndiGo on the resignation of Pieter Elbers
Pieter Elbers will resign as CEO of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) with immediate effect. The Board of Directors would like to thank Pieter for his contribution and services to the organization and wishes him success in his future endeavors.
IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will temporarily take over the management of the airline’s affairs until the Company announces the arrival of a new leader, which is expected soon.
“Rahul returns to take charge of the airline’s business to strengthen the Company’s Culture, reinforce Operational Excellence and deepen its commitment to providing exceptional care, reliability and professionalism to its customers,” said Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman.
“Having built and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years, I feel a deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards our nation and the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders,” Rahul Bhatia said.
“Placing Culture, Service Excellence and Stakeholder Trust at the forefront of its operations, IndiGo will continue to sharpen its strategic focus on serving India and its people with a professionally managed, operationally reliable and globally respected airline.”
Why did Pieter Elbers resign?
In his resignation, Pieter Elbers said that he was resigning for personal reasons. While Elbers asked for the notice period to be waived, he argued that he was otherwise eligible for any transfer or transition.
“Over the past years, it has been both an honor and a privilege to serve as IndiGo’s CEO since September 2022, and being a part of the great IndiGo family is a beautiful story of growth and the steps we have taken together on this path,” he said.
Mass cancellations in December sent the no-frills airline’s quarterly profits plummeting, sparking outrage across the country and leading to tighter regulatory scrutiny of IndiGo. The new pilot was accused of not adequately preparing for rest rules, leading to major chaos. At that time, the Indian government had announced that it would take strict action against the airline.
India’s aviation regulator had issued a show-cause notice to Elbers in December citing “significant lapses” in planning.
Who is Rahul Bhatia?
Rahul Bhatia is the Group Managing Director of InterGlobe Enterprises. Following the resignation of IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, Rahul Bhatia, who is also the editor-in-chief, took over the interim role.

With over three decades of experience in the travel industry, under his management, InterGlobe has diversified its portfolio to now include Aviation (IndiGo), Hospitality, Logistics, Technology, Airline Management, Advanced Pilot Training and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering,” the airline said on its website.
