Inside Lindsey Graham’s final hours after complaining he felt unwell… before his sudden death at 71

In the hours before Senator Lindsey Graham’s unexpected death, he discussed issues he wanted to resolve and shrugged off his health concerns.
The longtime Republican from South Carolina spoke by phone with President Donald Trump on Saturday night as he discussed his recent visit to Ukraine and the president reassured him about his planned attacks on Iran. Axios reports.
An unidentified person who spoke to Graham a few minutes later told the news outlet that he was complaining about not feeling well.
When the person later urged Graham to seek medical attention immediately, the Republican from South Carolina said he would do so after his appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.
‘I can’t die now,’ he joked later. According to the press, I still need to implement Russian sanctions, deal with Iran and achieve Israeli-Saudi normalization.’
But just hours later, the 71-year-old senator was seen lying on a stretcher as first responders attempted life-saving measures Saturday night. Obtained by TMZ.
He appeared to be intubated as emergency workers pushed the stretcher into a nearby ambulance headed for George Washington University Hospital.
According to multiple reports, authorities first received a 911 call about a “heart attack” at Graham’s home around 8:30 p.m. Multiple first responders were later seen descending on the street outside Graham’s home.

In the early hours of Sunday, Graham’s office announced that he “passed away due to a brief and sudden illness.”
The cause of death was revealed to be ‘Aortic Dissection Due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease’.
The Mayo Clinic defines aortic dissection as a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, the body’s main artery. If blood flows through the tear, it can be fatal. In Graham’s case, Plaque buildup in his heart weakened the aortic walls, causing them to rupture.
“The death certificate will remain pending until all toxicological and microscopic testing is completed, at which point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death,” Graham’s spokesman said in a statement just before 5 p.m. he said.

During last week’s July 4 holiday in Washington, D.C., Graham traveled to Ukraine, met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even visited a drone facility that was later destroyed by the Russians.
Graham was also targeted by Iranian leaders. An Iranian State TV presenter stated in a broadcast on Sunday that he “congratulated the Iranian people on the death.” [of] ‘U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham sent to hell.’
Liberal and conservative political commentators offered their own theories about the cause of Graham’s death after Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were seen at Graham’s home.

Megan Mobbs, director of the American Center for Safety and Security at the Independent Women’s Forum, a conservative think tank, said of X: ‘The heart attack tells us how her life ended. ‘This doesn’t tell us why his heart stopped.’
He added: ‘Given the threat landscape, the identities of America’s enemies, and the significant role Senator Graham has in confronting them, the American people deserve certainty.’
“This means a full forensic autopsy, preservation of all relevant biological samples, comprehensive toxicology and histology, and consultation with federal law enforcement and counterintelligence officials,” Mobbs said.
Conservative commentator Matt Van Swol shared a video of Graham from Ukraine on channel X last week, saying: ‘I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make sense for Lindsey Graham to suddenly die like this.’
‘We filmed him yesterday and he looked perfectly healthy. None of this makes sense,’ Van Swol said.
Right-wing journalist Laura Loomer had called for an ‘investigation’ into Graham’s death, particularly as Russian President Vladimir ‘Putin’s advisor Alexander Dugin had called for Lindsey Graham to be ‘straightened’ exactly 4 months ago.’
While some people claimed that strangers were involved in Graham’s death, others pointed out medical explanations.
Townhall columnist Dustin Gage shared that ‘He was told by a source in South Carolina that Senator Lindsey Graham had been dealing with blood pressure issues since his 40s’ and also ‘His father also died of a heart attack at the age of 69.’
‘I know the conspiracy theories won’t stop, but sometimes life just happens. “Not everything is a conspiracy,” Grage added.
Prominent conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch commented on Grage’s post, saying she agreed with Graham’s view that his death was “sudden, but heart issues usually are.”
Trump paid tribute to the late Senator at Truth Social shortly after the announcement was made.
‘Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest men and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working and a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND REGULATIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED. So sad!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
Graham was one of Trump’s closest allies in the U.S. Senate, consistently voting to enact the President’s agenda. The White House lowered flags to half-staff in his honor.
The senator was also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and Israel and advised the President on foreign policy issues regarding Russia and Iran.
In late March 2025, just over a month after Trump took office, the President announced a lengthy endorsement of Graham, referring to the senator as a “great friend.”
Vice President J.D. Vance on Sunday paid a lengthy tribute to Graham, with whom he spent two years as his colleague in the U.S. Senate, adding that Graham in particular “fought like hell for what he believed in and was just as willing to fight for you when necessary.”
Congressman Jim Clyburn, the only Democrat representing South Carolina in Washington, also expressed his condolences and shared that his ‘political dealings were sometimes partisan and passionate, but always pleasant and productive on behalf of the people of South Carolina.’
