Greggs to open branch at tourist hotspot in Spain selling Spanish food | World | News

Greggs is set to open its first international branch in Tenerife, serving a range of familiar pastries alongside Spanish dishes to appeal to local tastes. The UK’s popular bakery chain will launch its first expansion outside the country in nearly 20 years in the coming months, opening a new base at the island’s South Airport that will allow Brits to shop for its famous sausage rolls while on holiday.

The brand is collaborating with Lagarde Travel Retail to open the new store, which will be located in the departure zone and has been described as a “test” of “spreading our wings abroad”.

As well as Greggs’ signature sweet and savory baked goods, the branch will also offer Spanish Omelet Rolls and freshly squeezed orange juice to “give customers a refreshing taste of island life”. It will target around 13 million British holidaymakers who travel through Spain’s major airport each year, accounting for around half of the total number of visitors.

The bakery will offer seating for up to 92 customers, as well as food on the go.

Greggs managing director Roisin Currie said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of British and international passengers each year, making it an ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas environment.

“Bringing a piece of our home to the Canaries is an exciting milestone for Greggs and we are confident our great value proposition will resonate as much under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”

Javier Cagigal, managing director of Lagardere Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, added: “We are delighted to be partnering with Greggs to bring such a beloved brand to Tenerife South Airport for the first time.”

He added: “As passengers head home, this new opening offers them a familiar, comforting choice on departure, whether that’s a final treat, a cozy sit-down moment, or something to make the journey home easier.”

The early success has seen two more properties earmarked by the hospitality firm to open next year in terminals one and two at Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Spain.
