Israel and Lebanon agree to extend ceasefire by 45 days

The US State Department announced that Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend the ceasefire declared by US President Donald Trump in April for 45 days.

“The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to allow for further progress,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

The State Department described Israel-Lebanon talks held in Washington, D.C., on Thursday and Friday as “extremely productive” and said the countries would reconvene talks on June 2 and June 3.

On May 14 and 15, the United States hosted two days of highly productive talks between Israel and Lebanon. This week’s talks were the parties’ third meeting since Israel intensified air strikes on Lebanon after Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel on March 2, the third day of the US-Israeli war against Iran.

Last month, Israel expanded its ground offensive to southern Lebanon.

Israel’s war in Lebanon, which runs parallel to the US-Iran conflict, has been raging since Trump announced a ceasefire on April 16, although hostilities in southern Lebanon have since been largely brought under control.
