‘It was all quite ghastly and tacky’: The ‘chaos’ at Taylor Swift’s wedding, miffed A-listers queuing for the buffet and her brutal ranking system for guests… insiders reveal all the exclusive details to ALISON BOSHOFF

The event was intended to be a ‘magical’ celebration of Taylor Swift’s love story, as well as an expression of the sheer clout of her immense global fame.

But guests at pop icon Taylor’s July 3 wedding to football star Travis Kelce at New York’s Madison Square Garden were complaining after the event about “tacky” and “chaotic” scenes inside, with the champagne drying out “really early” and long lines for buffet dining.

‘I couldn’t believe there was a buffet at the wedding of the year!’ said one shocked guest. ‘This seemed like a very tacky move.’

Another added: ‘There were some slightly chaotic scenes around the food trucks with all these gorgeous stars having to queue. It wasn’t quite what I expected. You know Julia Roberts is there. And Steven Spielberg.’

And that’s before we get to the embarrassing system that ranks attendees from list A to list D based on their importance to the bride and tells them when to arrive accordingly.

British supermodel Cara Delevingne, for example, was the first D-list contingent to arrive at Madison Square Garden at 2.30pm, a full three hours before the ceremony.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding reportedly included a system that ranks attendees A through D based on their importance to the bride

Actor Bradley Cooper and TV presenter Graham Norton were not far behind, arriving at 3.30pm. Taylor’s best friend, Abigail Anderson, whom she had known since their high school days in Nashville, Tennessee, only arrived at 4:30 p.m.

The most important guests arrived at the ceremony around 17.30 as instructed.

A source said: ‘It was surprisingly chaotic inside. Those who came were stunned as people waited for hours doing nothing. Cocktails started at 16.00. People were literally twiddling their thumbs for hours.

‘If it was 2.30pm you wouldn’t even be able to entertain yourself by checking your phone. You were standing around like a lemon wondering why you were forced to come so early.’

Everyone had to leave their phones on arrival and faced long lines to pick up their phones at the end of the night.

Before she gave up on herself, Joann Jordan, wife of personal trainer Rob Jordan, shared a look at the transformation of the famously understated venue in downtown New York. In one photo, Rob and Joann walk up a grand staircase covered in red carpet, surrounded by white and dusky pink curtains.

‘An unforgettable evening celebrating the beginning of a beautiful new chapter in New York for our dear friends Travis and Taylor. Love was in the air, the city was magical and every detail was unforgettable!’ gushed.

Kelce’s friend DJ Chop UFL also shared photos of the same two stairs. ‘The secret garden was an incredible celebration and experience! I’m so happy for my brother and sister, Trav and Tay Tay. Congratulations once again! “Yesterday was perfect,” he said.

In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, guests can be seen queuing up to pass through the wedding’s interior ‘castle gate’ inside the vast venue, which can accommodate up to 20,000 people.

Celebrity guests included TV presenter Graham Norton (pictured), model Cara Delevingne and actor Bradley Cooper, while actor and comedian Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony.

News site TMZ reported that the theme is The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland.

A source says: ‘I know everyone says everything is decorated in a fairytale garden style so you’d never know it was Madison Square Garden – but apparently that’s not true.

‘When you walked in, some of the flowers, vines and garlands were so badly wrapped around the seating that they barely camouflaged the plastic bucket-style stadium seats. It was all pretty scary and sticky. They tried to cover up that there was a wedding at the stadium, but that also failed.

‘There were also lots of huge fake plastic trees everywhere and it looked very strange.’

Details of the theme seemed to escape the guests; some said it was an ‘American fairground’ while others described it as an ‘enchanted forest’.

Even stranger, the stadium was dotted around the perimeter with traditional pinball and slot machines adorned with pink, peach and coral curtains and lots of gold heraldic embroidery of the lovebirds’ initials, T&T.

Another unusual element of the wedding was the raffle. Celebrity guests were invited to win raffle tickets by playing games such as mini golf, pinball and ring toss at the after-wedding party.

Some were later notified they had won prizes, including designer Dior and Chanel bags, a Cartier watch and a classic 1970 Chevy car. Singer Avril Lavigne, who performed karaoke later in the evening, was also reported to be one of the lucky millionaires who won a free bag.

The incident apparently cost billionaire Taylor and her beau at least $20 million (£15 million). They also donated $26 million (£19.5 million) to charities including children’s hospitals and food banks.

The wedding was officiated by actor and comedian Adam Sandler, who is legally ordained and whose daughters are huge Swifties. Kelce befriended Sandler on the set of the 2025 Netflix comedy Happy Gilmore 2. Sandler apparently joked that he took the job to ‘get both Travis and Taylor in one of his next movies’ or to negotiate a good price if he made a movie about their life and love.

The bride wore Christian Dior haute couture and was flanked by her new nieces (daughters of Kelce’s brother Jason and wife Kylie), who tossed petals as she walked towards her groom to an instrumental version of his hit Love Story.

There were no traditional bridesmaids. Instead, Swift’s brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s ‘man of honour’, while the groom’s brother Jason was his best man.

According to ABC anchor and former Bill Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos, who gave a brief speech as he departed, the vows were ‘everything you hoped for; real, vulnerable, serious and silly’. News site TMZ reported that the couple exchanged deeply personal vows from ‘little books’ in the stadium.

One guest told me more casually: ‘The ceremony was really long. It took about 20 minutes for Taylor to say her vows, and the same for Travis.’

What was unknown was that unfortunately most of the guests had to stand. The source added: ‘There were only around 150 official seats, which meant around 800 people had to stand throughout the ceremony.

‘People were trying to reserve a seat by throwing their jackets over them, but they were kicked out of their seats by staff as these seats were reserved for those closest to them.’

Then came the dinner and party; dancing, DJ and live music performances, including former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney singing “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.

A source said: ‘It was a spectacular event but people couldn’t believe the champagne was gone so soon. This was a bit surprising.

‘There were also people who were surprised by the food. ‘It wasn’t great and it was served buffet style with long queues if you wanted food.’

The source adds: ‘The problems all stemmed from the fact that the wedding was too big. At a normal wedding, everyone knows the bride and groom, and since there aren’t 1,000 people, you don’t have to shuffle the arrivals or queue for food.

‘Also, in a normal wedding there is a table for people to sit at and then food is served. It was more of a stadium atmosphere. People felt like they were there to be Taylor’s audience that day.’

But one guest said there was real excitement and surprise at Sir Paul McCartney’s performance. She and Taylor are big fans of each other’s work, and Taylor is also close to her daughter, fashion designer Stella.

At one point, Taylor’s son-in-law, Travis Kelce, also stood up to sing. ‘I think it was of Rod Stewart standard,’ said the guest. ‘Not quite Macca level.’

Never known to downplay their cultural significance, Travis and Taylor will reportedly be producing a documentary about the big day, which will detail the wedding planning process from picking the flowers to how the event is organized behind the scenes. This will be sent to each guest as a thank you for coming.

Whether it can erase the less pleasant memories of food carts and long lines remains to be seen.
