‘It’s ridiculous!’ – Chris Philp utterly destroys Labour’s migrant plan | Politics | News

Britain will still be in the grip of a full-blown immigration crisis in 12 months’ time because of Labour’s toothless policies, a senior Tory has warned. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said illegal immigrants will continue to flock to the UK unless there is a strong deterrent and we remain within the European Convention on Human Rights.
He also harshly criticized new Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood for “talking a good game” but said Labor would never fully resolve the problem. Mr Philp’s stark warning, during an interview on our weekday news programme, the Daily Expresso, comes as the total number of migrants crossing the Channel this year reached 40,000. More than 700 migrants embarked on the perilous journey on 11 boats on Saturday, after 28 days of no arrivals.

Even Ms Mahmood acknowledged that the government’s efforts to crack down on smuggling rings were struggling.
Mr Philp said only radical change would significantly reduce numbers.
“It is completely failing, Labor has no control over our borders,” he said.
“There is no deterrent because illegal immigrants are housed in hotels paid for by taxpayers, can work in the illegal economy and have almost zero chance of being fired.
“No wonder illegal immigrants are flocking to Calais and then crossing the Channel.”
Britain has agreed with France to donate £500 million for extra police and a new detention center in 2023.
Sir Keir also donated £100 million to his flagship “one-in, one-out” extradition deal, but only 150 were sent back to France.
“The one in, one out plan is ridiculous because 10,000 people go in and about 50 people come out,” Mr Philp said.
“I don’t think Labor will fix this because they want to stay in the ECHR and it’s actually impossible to police our borders properly as long as you’re inside.”
Mr Philp said his opponent had done a better job than his predecessor Yvette Cooper and would ultimately fail to end the crisis.
“Even though new Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood talks a good game, it will actually do no good and we will be sitting here a year later and nothing will change,” he added.
