Jasmine Crockett expresses safety concerns while running in Texas Senate race

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said in an interview that some of her allies have raised concerns about her safety as she runs for the U.S. Senate.

Native Black Pod” In the podcast released Tuesday, Crockett discussed speaking with former Vice President Kamala Harris, the second Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate, about her decision to run for the Texas seat.

He emphasized that he also spoke to members of the US Senate about his campaign, and that an unnamed senator warned that he needed to take action.

“There was one member who said, ‘I think you can do it. I have no doubt,'” Crockett said. “And that member said, ‘My biggest concern is your safety. If you’re telling me you’re going to take whatever precautions you need to take, do it. But I don’t want you to be a sacrificial lamb.'”

Crockett said Harris, who he said sees him as “family,” expressed the same sentiment.

“I would say the vice president said the same thing, ‘The country needs you. I’m going to need you to make sure it’s as safe as possible,'” Crockett said. he said.

Crockett told host Angela Rye that he worked to wear a bulletproof vest after he started his campaign and wouldn’t run without it.

“It’s a sad truth, but I think about the courage those who came before me must have had,” Crockett said.

Crockett announced his campaign for Senate earlier this month. Although Republicans mocked and criticized the announcement, some of their Democratic colleagues also reportedly privately expressed disappointment with the news.

“He might win the primary, but the general can’t win in Texas,” one House Democrat told Axios anonymously.

In June, Crockett previously expressed doubts about pursuing a longer career in politics because of death threats faced in his position.

“I’ve done criminal defense and worked with true blue criminals, and I’ve never had to worry about death threats. And I’ve had to wake up and deal with death threats, having to think about where to go, how much security I have, because of all the hateful rhetoric going around, and a lot of it comes directly from the President of the United States himself,” Crockett said in June.
