Jasprit Bumrah to MISS Vijay Hazare Trophy? GCA secretary gives MAJOR update, says, ‘he is taking…’

GCA secretary Anil Patel gave the latest developments regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on December 24. Read here to find out what he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it mandatory for all Indian players to represent their domestic teams when they are not on national duty. As a result, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play for Delhi and Mumbai respectively in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday, December 24.

Kohli will play for Rishabh Pant-led Delhi team against Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Andhra Pradesh at the BCCI’s CoE ground in Bengaluru, while Rohit will play for Shardul Thakur’s Mumbai team against Sikkim at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Apart from former Indian captains, players like Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Arshdeep Singh will also participate in at least two matches of the one-day domestic tournament. However, Jasprit Bumrah will not play for his national team, Gujarat.

What did GCA secretary Anil Patel say about Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy?

According to Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel, 32-year-old Jasprit Bumrah will not play for the state team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to rest reasons.

“While Bumrah is resting, he will not feature in VHT,” GCA secretary Anil Patel was quoted as saying in Times of India on Tuesday.

Why was this special rule made for Jasprit Bumrah?

BCCI made an exception for Bumrah considering workload management. The Ahmedabad-based cricketer has suffered back injuries twice in the last three years, resulting in him being sidelined for long periods and missing major tournaments including the 2022 T20 World Cup, 2023 WTC final and 2025 Champions Trophy. To ensure he is fit and ready for important events, BCCI allowed him to miss domestic cricket matches.

Bumrah is expected to return to the field during the five-match T20I series between India and New Zealand, but is unlikely to be selected for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026. The T20I series will see matches in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram on January 21, 23, 25, 28 and 31.

Bumrah will then play in front of Indian fans in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup matches for the champions in February-March.
