Aaron Glenn returned to the New York Jets, where he started his playing career, for his first NFL head coaching opportunity.
Jets owner Woody Johnson continues to support his first-year coach despite the team’s 0-7 start. But Johnson’s faith doesn’t appear to extend to quarterback Justin Fields.
“Apparently [Glenn] He’s turning some of that around, Johnson said Tuesday at the NFL’s fall owners meeting.

Glenn benched Fields in favor of veteran signalman Tyrod Taylor at halftime of the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. It remains unclear whether Fields or Taylor will be at center in the Jets’ first offensive series in the team’s Week 8 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Johnson later expressed disappointment over a particular statistical rating attached to Fields.
“It’s tough when you have a quarterback with the rating we have,” he said. “He’s got talent, but we’re not kidding. If you look at any coach with a point guard like that, you’ll see similar results across the league. You have to play that position consistently and that’s what we’ll try to do for the rest of the season.”

Fields started six games with the Jets and missed Week 3 due to concussion protocol. He had a 91.1 passer rating this season. While Johnson hinted at optimism, he was quick to concede that “you can’t win with hope, but it works.”
Johnson has committed to letting the coaching staff make decisions about the quarterback position. He also said Glenn “will make the right decision with what we have.”

Johnson’s relationship with Glenn dates back almost three decades. The billionaire businessman doubled down on his belief in the Jets’ head coach.
“I believe in Aaron,” Johnson said. “I see the way he handles the room. If I were an actor, I would answer him because he’s a real guy. No pretense, no second agenda. What you hear is real. A lot of times actors can’t understand the truth. They get a lot of bullshit.”

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is scheduled for November 4. The Jets could be one of the teams looking to acquire or move players as the deadline approaches. Johnson said the front office will explore all options.
“I think we’re always looking at every option,” Johnson said. “I’m always researching what’s going on in football.”
