Kazakhstan joins handful of nations to bring AI into classrooms, to roll out nationwide by 2029

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on May 12 that aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into Kazakhstan’s secondary education system as part of broader efforts to modernize education and strengthen the country’s human capital in the face of the rapid global development of artificial intelligence.

Kazakhstan will be among the few countries that apply artificial intelligence to the secondary education system.

The Kazakh government is expected to approve a comprehensive action plan for 2026-2029 by July 1, focusing on the widespread introduction of artificial intelligence into schools.

The plan will include mechanisms for personalized learning, development of digital infrastructure, teacher training and protection of students’ personal data. The document also provides practical application of the recommendations of artificial intelligence expert Kai-Fu Lee.
The government will submit a proposal for a pilot project in secondary education by June 1, and the initiative is then expected to be scaled up nationwide. The reforms are aimed in part at reducing disparities in the quality of education between urban and rural schools.

As part of the pilot phase, schools will receive the necessary technical equipment, including stable high-speed internet access, by August 1. The decree stipulates that national standards regulating the use of artificial intelligence in secondary education will be adopted by September 1.

Kazakh authorities are also expected to approve a continuing professional development plan for educators to ensure that AI technologies serve as a complementary teaching tool without replacing teachers’ professional roles.
