Keiko Fujimori declared winner of Peru’s presidential runoff election

Conservative politician and former president’s daughter Keiko Fujimori was declared the winner of Peru’s second-round presidential election on Friday.
Fujimori, 51, will be inaugurated as Peru’s ninth president in 10 years at the end of this month. This was his fourth bid for the position after years of political instability in the country.
Fujimori thanked his supporters in a post announcing the election’s conclusion on X.

“I receive with deep gratitude the trust that millions of Peruvians have placed in me. A new phase begins. We undertake it with responsibility, humility and a deep sense of duty,” he wrote. “Every day of this transition is an opportunity to listen, to dialogue, and to be prepared for the beginning of a new government. Through these statements, we will share the progress and work we are doing at this stage. I invite you to join us.”

Peru’s top electoral authority certified the results on Friday. According to the Associated Press, Fujimori received 9 million 223 thousand votes, or 50.14 percent of the total votes, while nationalist Congressman Roberto Sánchez won 9 million 173 thousand votes, or 49.87 percent.
Fujimori advanced to the second round after defeating 33 other candidates in April.

His election comes at a time when voters are concerned about rising crime, particularly extortion by violent organized crime gangs. Fujimori vowed to get tough on crime with an “iron fist”.
She is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, whose government defeated the Shining Path extremist rebel group in the 1990s but also took an authoritarian turn.
He was convicted in 2009 of human rights violations in the fight against the rebels and later of corruption charges. His legacy in Peru remains deeply divisive.
