Kentucky basketball fans are melting down after losing top recruit to Kansas

Things aren’t going well for the Kentucky Wildcats’ basketball program these days.

I don’t want you to feel sorry for them or anything. This is Kentucky we’re talking about, after all, but compared to the success they’ve had in the past, it’s safe to say that the current regime in Lexington falls well short of the expectations the Big Blue Nation has placed on them.

Most programs would be more than happy with 22 wins and a poor second half away from the Sweet 16, but most programs aren’t Kentucky Wildcats.

Fans had some reason to be optimistic; Tyran Stokes, the nation’s top-ranked player, was set to announce where he’ll be playing basketball for the next semester and a half before inevitably moving to the NBA on Tuesday, and Wildcats fans were pretty confident they could secure his services.

It’s hard to blame them because the coaches welcomed him to campus last and were even willing to add his high school assistant coach, former NBA guard Jamal Crawford, to the Kentucky roster.

It felt like the planets were aligning so the Big Blue Nation could finally get some good news, and the mood on social media was one of cautious optimism.

“Oh no, we suck again!”

The goals keep coming for the Wildcats and this was a player they couldn’t afford to lose after bidding farewell to key players like Mouhamed Dioubate and Denzel Aberdeen via the transfer portal.

Naturally, Kentucky fans who parked themselves on social media awaiting news Wednesday afternoon were less than pleased when they realized Stokes would be heading to Lawrence in the fall.

“Rubbish.” “Circus.” “Clown show.”

I know it seems a bit extreme for a rookie to stray that much, but this is the best player in high school right now. A potential game changer for next season.

Additionally, it is indicative of a larger problem in Lexington right now.

Mark Pope and his staff have no one to turn to right now and are already bleeding talent this offseason, and this could be the latest evidence that Pope is off the rails.

It’s easy to point to BBN and laugh at it (God knows it is); but I don’t think that’s appropriate here.

Kentucky fans have very high standards for their coaches, but those standards are unrealistic.

They expect perfection because they’ve seen it before, and I can’t shoot them for demanding the same from Pope.

If this were an isolated incident, I would understand dunking on these fans, but this seems like a symptom of a larger problem.

Pope might start looking for a good real estate agent in the Lexington area, because unless this situation seriously turns around, he won’t be in business for long.
