The Trump administration is constrained in its war against Iran by the 1973 War Powers Resolution law, which requires various notification and approval steps to keep the commander in chief’s military powers in check.
One of the law’s provisions is that military action authorized by the President without Congressional approval must end after 60 days, or war must be declared. This 60-day period expires on Friday (US time).
A White House official said the administration was in “active discussions” with lawmakers about setting the deadline but did not elaborate. The official was granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.
The administration may request a 30-day extension of Trump’s order by notifying Congress in writing that the need for military action continues. The White House, which has long emphasized that the President is working on a diplomatic option in Iran, has not publicly stated whether Trump wants this extension.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the ceasefire postponed the deadline for approval.
