In the personal message he will publish today, the King will tell about his own cancer journey and emphasize the importance of early screening. Charles, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer early last year and continues his regular treatment, is taking part in Stand Up To Cancer 2025, a joint campaign between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.
The week-long campaign, which started on Monday, aims to raise awareness of the importance of early detection, raise funding for cancer research and support everyone affected by the disease.
The King’s message will be broadcast at 8pm before Davina McCall hosts the broadcast live from a cancer clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. It was recorded in the Morning Room of Clarence House in the last week of November.
The King will use his message to highlight the importance of cancer screening programs in enabling early diagnosis and will reflect on his own recovery journey.
This year, Stand Up To Cancer launched a simple online screening checker (screeningchecker.co.uk) that helps users identify which breast, bowel and cervical screening programs they may be eligible for, providing trusted information from Cancer Research UK and directing users to further support where needed.
It’s not the first time the King has reflected on his cancer journey; He said his own experience with cancer in the spring made him appreciate the work organizations and individuals do for those diagnosed.
Charles, 77, said that “the darkest moments of the disease can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”
In a personal message to those attending tonight’s reception celebrating community-based cancer organizations, the monarch said: “Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and sometimes frightening experience for these individuals and their loved ones.
“But as one of those statistics myself, I can also vouch for the fact that this can be an experience that brings the best of humanity into sharp focus.
“It has certainly given me a deeper appreciation for the extraordinary work undertaken by the extraordinary organizations and individuals gathered here this evening, many of whom I have known, visited and supported over the years.
“And it reinforced what I had long observed during these visits: that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated with the greatest compassion.”
