King congratulates United States on 250th anniversary

King Charles III congratulated the American people and President Donald Trump on the 250th anniversary of US independence, praising the close partnership forged between the two countries despite their turbulent beginnings.

“This year marks a truly historic turning point and a moment of great celebration for Americans around the world,” the monarch wrote in his message.

“It offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on the extraordinary journey of the United States over the last two and a half centuries and to honor all that has been achieved since 1776.”

This Independence Day, the United States celebrates 250 years since the 13 colonies declared independence from Britain, triggering the Revolutionary War, which ended when officials in London recognized U.S. sovereignty in 1783.

The former enemies later formed what became known as the “special relationship”.

Charles described ties between Britain and the US as a story of “an extraordinary evolution, from overcoming conflicts to forging one of the closest and most productive alliances the world has ever seen”.

“Together, we face the challenges of today, and the opportunities of tomorrow,” he wrote, adding that he had no doubt the two countries would continue to defend their shared values over the next 250 years.

As an example, Charles noted the responsibility to protect nature, which has long been at the heart of the King’s public work.

In April, Charles and Queen Camilla made a multi-day state visit to the United States, where they were received by the President at the White House.

Their schedules ranged from tea at the White House with Trump and his wife, Melania, a white-tie banquet in their honor, a historic speech to Congress and a cherry tree-lined street party in rural Virginia.

The visit comes at a time when relations between the two countries are strained by issues including war involving Iran, making it a delicate diplomatic balancing act for the monarch.

Trump later praised Charles in glowing terms.
