Know The Top Countries That Waste The Most Food: China, India Lead Others

Do not waste food .. These boards appear in hostels, hotels and other foods, distribution agencies. Even though people give them a look, even if they have a significant impact on our society, our economy and even natural resources, it seems to be the least care of this aspect. Although it evacuates valuable resources such as water and land, hundreds of billions of food is wasted every year. Food wastes apply pressure on the environment because it creates 8-10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and uses approximately 30 percent of worldwide agricultural lands worldwide to produce only foods that obtain waste.

When wasted foods are shifted to storage areas, it sews and releases the commodity, one of the most harmful greenhouse gases that cause climate change. According to scientists, foods alone are responsible for about 9 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions from the global system.
While many food wasted, hundreds of millions of people around the world are still hungry. According to the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), more than $ 1 trillion is thrown every year, while about 783 million people are fighting hunger.
UNEP’s Food Waste Report 2024 puts China and India at the top of the list that spent 108.6 million tons and 78.1 million tons respectively that year. The major population in both countries lead to this great waste. The United States also wasted about 24.7 million tons every year and ranks third. In Europe, countries such as France and Germany throw between 3.9 and 6.5 million tons each year. Meanwhile, countries like South Africa and Ghana spend more than 2.8 million tons annually.
Although the US is third in terms of total food waste annually, it spends more food per capita compared to India. When we look at food waste per capita, an average Indian household wasted about 55 kg of food per year, while this number is 73 kg in the USA. In the Philippines, the food that wasted per capita is the lowest per capita, much less than India or the United States. The country spends 2.9 million tons a year.
