Kolkata Police bans ‘victory processions, rally, or public celebration’ on May 4 for Bengal votes counting day

In its notification, the police said that the restriction will remain in force throughout its jurisdiction until May 4 and will be applied in the same way to all political parties and groups without exception.
No celebrations on census day
This order comes as the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections scheduled to be held on May 4 is expected to continue throughout the day. This step is aimed at maintaining peace and preventing any law and order problems during the process, officials said.
Ceremonies are allowed with permission as of May 5
Kolkata Police said that victory processions can be held only from May 5 and that too after obtaining prior permission from the officer in charge of the relevant police station.
“Such permitted walks must strictly adhere to the applicable rules and guidelines and conditions specified in the permit,” the notification said.
Legal action alert
Police warned that any breach of the order would lead to legal action under relevant legal provisions. Officers on duty at all police stations have been instructed to be careful and strictly follow the rules.
The notice will be widely publicized through print, electronic and social media, as well as official newspapers and police notice boards, officials said.
