Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia, who participated in the team’s World Series run against the Toronto Blue Jays, reported the death of his young daughter.

Vesia and her husband shared the news on Instagram on Friday that their newborn daughter died on October 26, in the middle of the team’s championship run.

“There are no words to describe the pain we feel, but we hold him in our hearts and cherish every second we spent with him,” the couple wrote in a joint post.

A day before the start of the World Series, which runs from October 24 to November 1, the Dodgers announced that Vesia would be away while dealing with a “deeply personal family matter.”

Major League Baseball shared in a post on its website that Vesias was expecting the birth of his first child during the team’s postseason run.

The team did not publicly share any further updates on Vesia’s absence, saying they wanted to give him the space he needed.

“We didn’t want to have any leverage potential. This is a much bigger deal than baseball,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said before the Series. “For us, it was just doing whatever little part we could to be 100% supportive.”

In the third game of the series, the pitchers who played for Vesia honored him by writing jersey number 51 on their hats. In a show of solidarity, the Blue Jays’ pitchers began doing the same in the sixth game.

“Even a heartbreaking description is not good enough for these guys to recognize Alex and what he and Kay went through,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, referring to Vesia and his wife, Kayla. “But the fact that they accepted this shows how much respect and love they have for each other.”

In his Instagram post, Vesias thanked the Dodgers for understanding and supporting them during their time of pain. They also expressed their gratitude to the Blue Jays and all baseball fans, as well as the medical staff at Los Angeles hospital Cedars Sinai.

The couple did not share information about the cause of their daughter’s death.

“Our little angel, we love you forever and you are always with us,” Vesias wrote.
