Amid speculations that RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav may contest the Rajya Sabha elections in Bihar, party president Lalu Prasad convened the Parliamentary executive meeting in Patna on Sunday, March 1, 2026. The meeting is scheduled to be held four days before the last date for filing nominations in the Rajya Sabha elections.

“I have nothing to comment on the speculations, but one thing is quite clear. People want our leader Mr. Yadav ji to be in the Upper House of Parliament. Let’s wait. Everything will become clear soon,” RJD State unit spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwary told reporters. Five of the total 16 Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar will remain vacant in April and elections will be held on March 16.

The Rajya Sabha tenures of JD(U)’s Harivansh Narayan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, RJD’s Prem Chand Gupta and Amarendra Dhari Singh, and RLM’s Upendra Kushwaha, which is part of the NDA, will end next month.

RJD, the main Opposition party in the state, has only 25 MLAs, too few to provide seats in the Rajya Sabha. The RJD-led grand alliance, which includes Congress, CPI(ML), CPI(M) and IIP, has only 35 members in the 243-member State Assembly; That’s six fewer than the minimum required to get a seat in the Upper House.

Uncertainty over the fifth seat remains, given the current situation where neither the RJD-led Mahagatbandhan nor the NDA have enough numbers to win on their own.

The support of at least 41 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Assembly is needed to win a seat in the Rajya Sabha. The deadline for candidacy applications is March 5, and the review of documents will take place the next day. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their candidacies until March 9.
