A leisure center was evacuated and a series of people were taken to hospital after a “strong chlorine smell” from a pool. Emergency services were called to the Abbey Leisure Complex in Cambridge, Whitehill Road immediately after 11.15 on Saturday morning.

Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), who manages the site, confirmed that the leisure center was evacuated after “physical effects caused by a strong chlorine smell in the pool”. A spokesman said: “The personnel came to 11.30 at the scene and warned the emergency services that participated in a few people at the scene. After the full ventilation of the building, the fire brigade was not offered any risk and confirmed that it was not left at 12.30.”

The spokesman said the center was completely reopened at 14:30.
