LeT terrorist Zakir Ganai killed in six-day Shopian operation

Srinagar: A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist identified as Zakir Ganai was killed in South Kashmir’s Shopian district after a relentless six-day operation launched by the Army and other security forces based on a tip-off by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, officials said on Wednesday.

The Army’s Chinar Corps said in an

The statement said, “Weapons, ammunition and other warehouses for war were seized.”

Providing detailed information, officials said that there have been two armed clashes since July 3, and that class C terrorist Ganai (26) was injured before.

The terrorist was a resident of Motalhama in neighboring Kulgam district and had been operating since 2023.

His body bore gunshot wounds to his left lung and leg, and authorities said he was injured and crawled to a shed in the orchards.
According to officials, Ganai left his home for Dialgam on September 27, 2023, to take up the shuttering work but could not return home. After his family members could not trace him, a missing report was filed at Kulgam police station on October 3, 2023. Officials said that Ganai later joined the Resistance Front (TRF) terrorist organization, an offshoot of LeT.

He was involved in an FIR registered at Kulgam police station under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), they said.

Police also said about the killing of Ganai in He shared:

Authorities said security forces first detected the two terrorists through security cameras on July 3 in a dense orchard in Meemandar district.

They said a joint police team comprising the army’s 55 RR and 44 RR and the CRPF had maintained a tight cordon around the area for the last five days, with intermittent firing taking place between the two sides.

The army’s specialist counterinsurgency unit, Victor Force, had deployed additional personnel to illuminate the area as well as to block any possible escape routes through the dense orchard foliage.

During the summer months, dense vegetation provides natural cover, making surveillance difficult and allowing stranded terrorists to take advantage of blind spots to break the cordons, officials said.

Shopian has historically served as a critical transit corridor connecting south Kashmir to central Kashmir and the Pir Panjal region.

Apart from Ganai, the other terrorist who was trapped was thought to be Latif, who joined the organization last year.
