Kerala Medical Board To Probe Toddler’s Death From Anesthesia

– Kannur: Police will form a medical board as part of the investigation into the death of a 1.5-year-old boy at a private hospital in Payyannur after he was anesthetized for a lip injury, authorities said on Sunday.

In the investigation carried out under the leadership of Payyannur Deputy Chief of Police, it was decided to establish a medical board consisting of specialist doctors to determine whether the death was caused by any malfunction in the application of anesthesia.

The boy, Devansh Shouria from Eramam, suffered a lip injury while playing on July 5.

The person’s doctors, who were taken to a private hospital in Payyannur, recommended that the wound be stitched under anesthesia.

According to the family’s complaint, the child lost consciousness after anesthesia and was taken to another hospital in Kannur, where he died.

After the complaint, the police, anesthesiologist Dr. He filed a case against Anjali Poduval.

On Saturday, the child’s family held a protest demonstration with his funeral in front of the hospital, demanding the appointment of all doctors involved in the child’s treatment.

Police spoke to the relatives and assured them of a fair investigation.

Officials at Payyannur police station said the medical board will review the autopsy report, records of anesthesia administration, treatment administered and the child’s medical history to determine whether there was any medical negligence that led to the death.

They said that work has been initiated to establish the health board and that the process will be completed soon.

Following the incident, the hospital denied claims of medical negligence, claiming that the child suffered a heart attack after being anesthetized and was immediately transferred to a ventilator.
