The husband of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children, is expected to testify on her behalf at her upcoming trial.

35-year-old former nurse Clancy’s three young children – 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan – are scheduled to appear in court this week in the murder case. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday morning in Plymouth Superior Court.

Patrick Clancy is one of more than 200 people who may be called to testify. Patrick and his wife, Lindsay, claimed that the doctors who treated him misdiagnosed him and overmedicated him, which caused him to hallucinate voices telling him to kill his children.

The allegations are at the center of lawsuits alleging medical professionals failed to diagnose the woman’s increasing postpartum psychosis before the fatal tragedy.

In the amended complaint filed in Norfolk Superior Court, Lindsay Clancy alleges that a network of psychiatric professionals misdiagnosed her, failed to properly treat what she said was postpartum-onset bipolar disorder, and prescribed a changing medication regimen that allegedly worsened her condition before her children’s death on Jan. 24, 2023.

The complaint accuses the defendants of medical malpractice and negligence and claims they failed to realize that the “intrusive thoughts” Clancy reported were actually auditory hallucinations that made her a danger to herself and her children.

“Lindsay Clancy did everything a mother in her situation could do,” the lawsuit alleges, seeking treatment, going to emergency rooms, contacting crisis services, visiting hospitals and repeatedly reporting that her symptoms were worsening.

The filing offers a chronicle of medical failure in the months before the murders and portrays Clancy, a registered nurse who worked in labor and delivery at Massachusetts General Hospital, as a woman unraveling.

According to the complaint, Clancy began showing signs of hypomania immediately after giving birth to Callan in May 2022.

Approximately 12 weeks after birth, Clancy’s condition developed into severe anxiety, depression, fatigue and insomnia, according to the application. He was allegedly sleeping only a few hours a night and had difficulty with basic daily activities.

The lawsuit states that Clancy first sought psychiatric care in September 2022 and was prescribed Zoloft. It was claimed that after the dose was increased, he was sleepless for 48 hours, became lost in thought, and his anxiety worsened.

The lawsuit claims that these symptoms should have triggered anxiety about antidepressant-induced activation and possible bipolar disorder. The lawsuit alleges that Clancy instead used a number of medications, including Prozac, Ambien, Remeron, Klonopin, Seroquel, Trazodone, Valium, and Amitriptyline, without proper coordination between his providers.

The complaint alleges that providers failed to obtain a complete psychiatric history, failed to communicate with each other, and failed to recognize that antidepressants were worsening her symptoms.

In late November 2022, after taking Remeron, Clancy allegedly became disoriented, disorientated and unsure of what was real, according to the filing.

Days later, after starting Seroquel, he allegedly developed suicidal thoughts and began hearing a voice telling him he would never be the same and that he wanted to die.

The complaint alleges that her husband, Patrick, contacted nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta’s office on Dec. 15 to report that his wife had had a “devastating week” and had been hearing voices all day.

The filing also alleges that Lindsay Clancy told family members that she had thoughts of harming children. She also allegedly believed people could hear her thoughts and feared she would be hospitalized and lose her children.

According to the lawsuit, Clancy went to Massachusetts General Hospital on Dec. 20, then participated in a partial hospitalization program at Women and Infants Hospital in Rhode Island.

In the complaint, Dr. Zobeida Diaz allegedly concluded that Clancy did not have postpartum depression and denied bipolar disorder despite her severe depression and anxiety scores.

Days later, Clancy was admitted to McLean Hospital on New Year’s Eve. He was placed in a locked unit where suicide checks were performed, but he did not see a doctor until Jan. 3 because of the holiday weekend, the complaint states. He was discharged on January 5 after a five-day hospital stay.

In outpatient care, Clancy’s condition continued to deteriorate, the lawsuit says.

On January 16, he allegedly reported that he had hallucinations such as “You should hurt children” and “You should kill yourself.” Tufts then prescribed another antidepressant, Amitriptyline, according to the complaint.

In the case, on January 23, Dr. It is stated that Jennifer Tufts increased the dose of Amitriptyline. Allegedly, Clancy did not sleep that night.

The complaint alleges that by the next day, Clancy was severely depressed and experiencing incessant suicidal hallucinations. After her husband left to get takeaway, a commanding voice allegedly told him it was his “last chance” and ordered him to kill the children so she could kill herself.

The lawsuit alleges that Clancy then entered a dissociative, dream-like state, then strangled the children and attempted to kill himself by drugging, cutting his wrists and neck, and jumping from a second-story window.

Cora and Dawson died that day. Callan died three days later. Clancy has pleaded not guilty in the criminal case.
