Rep. Lisa McClain, one of the House GOP’s top leaders, has a family investment ready to tap into SpaceX Her husband broke the public record after buying Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI for up to $250,000 before folding into the rocket maker.
McClain, R-Mich., the No. 4 House Republican and chairman of the House Republican Conference, announced Jan. 7 that his wife had purchased it on Dec. 15. congressional financial file. The value of the transaction was between $100,001 and $250,000.
CNBC couldn’t find a similarly clear convention stake in SpaceX or expected tech initial public offerings from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic; but private company assets can be difficult to trace through spouses, trusts, LLCs, or venture funds.
The investment was tied to SpaceX in February when Musk folded his xAI venture into the rocket and satellite company. SpaceX opened its IPO at $150 per share, raising approximately $75 billion, increasing the company’s market value to over $2 trillion.
The potential positive outcome for McClain’s family is significant. If xAI stock is converted into SpaceX shares, market-tracking estimates based on SpaceX’s market cap on Friday suggest the investment could yield up to $150,000 on paper; That’s almost a full year of McClain’s $174,000 congressional salary.
“Chairman McClain’s investments are a matter of public record,” Joe Buccino, communications director for the House Republican Conference, told CNBC. “They were done in accordance with all acts of the House and applicable laws.”
The potential payday follows a chain of events that is already under scrutiny.
Days after McClain’s husband, Michael, bought xAI stock in December, the Department of Defense announced plans to integrate Grok models from xAI into GenAI.mil, a Pentagon platform designed to help military personnel use productive AI tools.
In January, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a broader expansion of Grok’s role at the Pentagon, including access to the Department of Defense’s classified networks. A few weeks later, Musk brought xAI into SpaceX.
There is no evidence that McClain knew about the Pentagon’s plans for xAI before the purchase, that she was involved in those decisions, or that she or her husband traded on nonpublic information. He does not serve on any congressional committees that oversee defense or technology. Members of Congress are allowed to own individual stocks and private investments as long as they comply with disclosure rules and do not trade on classified information.
“I can 100% guarantee that we do not have insider information. Because if we did, we wouldn’t have bought 100,000 shares, we would have bought a lot more,” McClain said in a January interview with NewsNation. he said.
