Liverpool FC part with manager Arne Slot

Liverpool have parted ways with manager Arne Slot, who led the Merseyside club to the Premier League title, after just 12 months.

The English giants announced on Saturday night (AEST) that they were parting ways with 47-year-old Dutchman Slot, who is set to take on one of the biggest roles in world football in 2024, after Jürgen Klopp stepped aside saying he had “run out of energy”.

Slot guided the Reds to the EPL title last season but Liverpool sit fifth behind champions Arsenal in 2025-26.

“Liverpool FC can confirm that Arne Slot will step down as head coach with immediate effect and the process to appoint a successor is ongoing,” the Reds said in a statement on social media.

“For his part, he leaves with the Premier League title and we offer our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”

Slot’s second season at Liverpool turned from a title defense to a desperate fight for Champions League qualification, with the team failing to win the domestic cup; This marked a dramatic decline for the defending champions.

“It goes without saying that this has been a difficult decision for us as a club to make. Arne’s contribution to Liverpool FC during his time with us has been significant, meaningful and most importantly successful for the fans and ourselves,” Liverpool said in a statement.

“From the moment we first met Arne, it was immediately clear that he was an individual who not only accepted responsibility, but embraced it.

“This was evident when he agreed to take over as head coach, leading us to the Premier League title and ending the season facing significant challenges and burdens.

“At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary for the club to continue moving forward. It must be emphasized again that this was not a decision taken lightly, nothing more.”

After record spending that featured forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, midfielder Florian Wirtz and versatile defenders Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, the Reds finished the 2025/26 campaign well behind after an injury-plagued season. Favorite sons Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also left the team at the end of the season.

43-year-old Spaniard Andoni Iraola, who left his post as Bournemouth coach at the end of the season after the club qualified for the Europa League for the first time in its history, is one of the most popular names in the Liverpool role.
