Lottery winner who blew his £100,000 scratch card fortune and turned to drug dealing is jailed after threatening to petrol bomb a family home

A lottery winner who squandered his £100,000 scratchcard fortune and turned to drug dealing has been jailed for 15 months after threatening to kill a family by detonating a petrol bomb on them.

Jack Tanbini, 30, who won with a £1 rewards card in 2014, was arrested after he and his friend Logan Hards, 30, carried out a violent raid on a family’s home in November 2024.

CCTV shows thugs violently kicking in the door of a flat where the brothers lived in Watson Street, Dundee, as a woman inside the house screamed.

The duo tried but failed to kick in the door before returning for a successful second attempt.

In the footage, they can be heard saying: ‘Hear that you are far away to be killed. If you don’t throw the money out the window, you’re about to be gassed. I will kill your mother. Where’s the money?’

Hards and Tanbini were later seen fleeing the apartment with a bag full of unknown stolen items.

Both admitted threatening to kill residents and breaking into the property before stealing items.

Tanbini, who was already serving a five-year prison sentence for drug dealing, was given an extra 15-month prison sentence at Dundee Sheriff Court, while Hards was given 180 hours of unpaid work.

Tanbini’s lawyer Jim Caird said: ‘He has no record of violence. He is currently serving a very long sentence. The date of liberation is not until the end of 2029.

‘The sentence he received was absolutely life changing as he had never been to prison before. ‘A very hard lesson has been learned.’

Tanbini was jailed for five years and five months in 2025 after he was caught supplying nearly £150,000 worth of cocaine.

In 2019, he was caught with nearly £1,000 worth of cannabis after being stopped by police for dangerous driving.

He admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance and possession of cannabis, and told the court he had already wasted most of his youth lottery winnings.

Cash and carry apprentice Tanbini bought the £1 scratch card after a shopkeeper refused to let him pay for chips after he made his purchases.

He claimed he would use his windfall to buy driving lessons and a car, but by 2019 he had lost every penny.

Mr Caird said: ‘He went five years without having to work. He’s left with around £2,000.’

Hards’ lawyer Jim Laverty said: ‘His daughter was born three weeks ago. He is aware of the serious nature of the crime. ‘The imposition of detention will significantly impact others.’
