Lula asks Trump for tariff relief in ‘very good’ call

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva asked US President Donald Trump to remove the 40 percent tariff imposed on Brazil imports by the US government during a telephone conversation.

According to Lula’s office, the leaders spoke for 30 minutes, exchanged phone numbers, and reiterated Lula Trump’s invitation to attend the upcoming climate summit in Belem.

Later, Trump sent a good conversation with Lula to Social.

“We’ve discussed many things, but mostly focused on the economy and trade between two countries,” Trump wrote, “he added that” he’ll come together in a future far from both Brazil and the United States, “he added.

Trump’s management brought a 40 percent tariff to Brazilian products in July above a previously implemented 10 percent tariff.

Lula reminded Trump that Brazil is one of the three G20 countries where the US continues to trade.

The US administration tariffs justified by saying that Brazil’s policies and former President Jair Bolsonaro’s criminal prosecution constitutes an economic emergency.

At the beginning of this month, Bolsonaro was sentenced to attempting a coup after losing the re -election proposal in 2022, and a panel of the Supreme Court sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison.

Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that his call was “positive” after the meeting, while Vice President Geraldo Alckmin described it as “better than expected” and said that negotiations between the two countries would progress.

Last month, after a short encounter at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump said he plans to meet with Lula and emphasized “excellent chemistry”.
