Six killed in floods, landslips in Northeast

Landslides caused by floods and rain have killed six people in Assam and Meghalaya in the last 48 hours, taking the death toll to at least 25 in the northeastern region since the last week of June.

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Monday, July 20, 2026, affecting 3.63 lakh people in 16 districts in the eastern, central, western and southern parts of the state. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said five people, including three boys and two girls, died in Jorhat and Karbi Anglong districts.

“A total of 794 villages were flooded and a total crop area of ​​19,099.59 hectares was affected. More than 34,900 people were shifted to relief camps in 16 districts,” an ASDMA spokesperson said.

“Five rivers namely Brahmaputra, Buridihing, Dikhou, Disang and Dhansiri are flowing above the danger level at some places. Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat are the worst affected districts where a total of 3.13 lakh people are affected,” he said.

CM says government. departments are on alert

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has instructed his four cabinet colleagues to visit the flood-affected areas and supervise rescue and relief operations.

“I have directed the authorities to ensure adequate foodgrain supply to all flood-affected areas. Every department has been put on high alert and is working in coordination to minimize the impact of the flood,” he said.

The Prime Ministry said rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas. 510 people were rescued safely by the State Disaster Response Force and Fire and Emergency Services teams in Sivasagar. Additional boats and Army helicopters were deployed to reach inaccessible areas during rescue operations.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that the overflow of Dikhow River and severe floods in and around Simaluguri town of Sivasagar district have affected operations in the eastern half of Assam.

“Flood waters inundated the Simaluguri station site, railway tracks, railway colony and adjoining areas. The water also breached the railway track in Simaluguri division,” NFR chief spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said.

More rainfall likely

According to the India Meteorological Department, rainfall activity is expected to continue across the state for the next two days.

Meanwhile, rain-induced landslide caused the death of a child in a village under Mawhati Assembly constituency in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district. Road links to other parts of the state have been cut, officials said.

In Nagaland, the Konyak Union said the death toll in landslides in Mon town on Sunday rose to nine. The union, the apex body of the Konyak Naga community, has urged the government to declare an emergency in the Mon region following widespread devastation caused by incessant monsoon rains.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has warned of widespread storms and intermittent rains in the state for the next four days.

Prime Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the site on Monday to assess conditions at the site. He met with community leaders and inspected the restoration work. It also carried out an aerial survey in the affected Tizit and Tuli.

In June, at least five people lost their lives in floods caused by heavy rain in the Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh.
