Lynx star Kayla McBride becomes latest to speak out on WNBA 3-point contest drama: ‘Half a– invite’

There may be a communication problem in the WNBA.

Minnesota Lynx star Kayla McBride, like New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, had to set the record straight about not taking part in the WNBA 3-point contest and give her thoughts on the WNBA’s “half–” invitation.

“Also, for those who are VERY concerned. I received a half-invite to the 3-point challenge in a random message via my manager 48 hours ago. Not officially,” McBride said on his Instagram Story on Wednesday.

“It’s weird to post things like I’m afraid of cigarette smoke, and if you haven’t heard it from me you probably shouldn’t believe it,” he wrote with a shrug.

Instead, he said, the spotlight should be on the contest’s participants: Bridget Carleton of the Portland Fire, Azzi Fudd of the Dallas Wings, Natisha Hiedeman of the Seattle Storm, Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream, Marina Mabrey of the Toronto Tempo and Janelle Salaün of the Golden State Valkyries.

“We should focus on the great shooters anyway!!! because there are some kills here. Good luck to everyone involved and I’m impressed that when you start having shooting competitions, pin downs come up,” McBride said.

The 34-year-old player has previously participated in three 3-point competitions but has never won the competition. He last attended in 2024.

Ionescu is the defending champion and has won two of the three 3-point events. He said he was never formally invited and disputes the idea that he refused to attend.

McBride is in the midst of a career year, averaging 18.2 points per game in 28 games, matching his career-best performance in 2018.

The event will take place on Friday at 8pm ET and will be without McBride, Ionescu and Caitlin Clark.
