Maddington residents warned to shelter indoors, avoid toxic smoke from hazardous fire

Maddington residents have been warned to stay indoors to avoid dangerous fumes after a fire at a lithium battery recycling plant started emitting toxic smoke.
Emergency services rushed to industrial premises after reports of potentially dangerous smoke billowing from the building near the intersection of the Albany Highway and Burwash Place at around 1.40pm.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a hazardous materials emergency alert to residents in the area bounded by Dalziell Street, Morley Street, Aldington Street, Miller Street and the Albany Expressway.
“There is a direct threat to society,” the DFES warning said.
“There is a fire at a recycling facility causing hazardous fumes to spread eastwards.
“As a precautionary measure, people in the area should stay indoors, away from smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed.
“Air conditioners also need to be turned off.
“People should avoid the area. If you are already in the area, seek advice from emergency staff.
“People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct.”

Li-ion Energy, the facility where the fire broke out, recycles and refurbishes lithium batteries.
Firefighters fighting the blaze were the first to notice the fire near Maddington base.
St John WA said a man in his 40s was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for smoke inhalation, while another man was treated at the scene.

The police are also at the scene. Drivers were asked to stay away from the area.
The Albany Highway is closed between River Avenue and Stokely Creek Crossing and The Crescent is closed between Morley Street and the Albany Highway.
