Maharashtra Govt to set up medical cyclotron project in Nagpur to elevate cancer research

The Maharashtra government, in the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, approved the setting up of the High Energy Medical Cyclotron Project (HEMCP) in Nagpur to elevate cancer diagnosis, treatment and research in the State and ₹ 300 crore to be implemented through ‘Mahacare’ (Maharashtra Cancer Care, Research and Education Foundation)
The government will set up a separate subsidiary to manage HEMCP, which aims to make Nagpur a radiopharmaceutical innovation hub serving Central India.
According to officials of the Medical Education and Pharmaceuticals department, the aim is to ensure local availability of radioisotopes required for PET-CT and Nuclear Medicine services.
Under the project, 30 hectares of land has been approved at Bhansoli (Kinhi) in Hingna taluka and the Department of Medical Education and Industries department will finance the project on a 50-50 basis, while the funds will be allocated for land, construction, machinery and human resources after the final project report.
“Nagpur has been selected as the beneficiary within a radius of around 500 kilometers in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh can benefit from this project. Nagpur is an ideal hub for this project as it has AIIMS, National Cancer Institute and Government Medical College, reducing dependency on Mumbai and Hyderabad,” said an official of the department of Medical Education and Pharmaceuticals.
The meeting also approved formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Companies Act, 2013 for implementation of the project. In this, the Commissioner of the Department of Medical Education will be the Chairman and the Development Commissioner of the Department of Industries will be the Co-Chairman. The Chief Executive Officer of this Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be the Member Secretary.
