Mallory McMorrow announced Sunday that she is suspending her campaign for the U.S. Senate in the battleground state of Michigan.

The Michigan state senator’s decision comes after his party’s primary, long-time Senate Democratic leader Sen. Moderate Rep. Haley Stevens, backed by Chuck Schumer and the establishment, and progressive champions Sen. That leaves it as a two-way race between Bernie Sanders and former Wayne County Health Department Director Abdul El-Sayed, a left-leaning candidate backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

McMorrow’s name will remain on the ballot in the Aug. 4 primary because ballots have already been printed and distributed to absentee voters. based on To the Michigan Bridge.

The eventual Democratic nominee will face former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, who is hurtling toward the GOP nomination in the midterm elections, in a critical race to retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.

The seat is a top target for Republicans and a must-have for Democrats aiming to win back the Senate majority from the GOP, which currently controls the chamber 53-47. Prominent nonpartisan political obstructionists cast Michigan’s Senate race as a toss-up.

In a video published on X explaining her decision, McMorrow did not give a specific reason for ending her campaign. Instead, he thanked his staff and supporters for helping build what he described as a campaign supported by small-dollar donations and no corporate PAC money.

But McMorrow, who has seen her national profile expand in recent years and is running as a progressive in the ideological field between El-Sayed and Stevens, has suspended her campaign due to poll numbers and fundraising setbacks that have failed to keep pace with her two main rivals.

McMorrow also vowed to fully support whichever Democrat wins the primary and face off against Rogers, who is running for the Senate for a second consecutive term and will lose to the current Senator in 2024. Elissa Slotkin by a very slim margin.

“So here’s what we’re going to do next. Every day until November 3rd. We’re going to win the Senate seat and send Mike Rogers back to Florida for good,” he said. “Whoever wins the primary on August 4th will have my full support.”

After McMorrow’s announcement, Stevens praised his fellow Democrat, calling him an “important voice” for policies that benefit Michigan families.

Stevens later argued that he was the strongest Democratic candidate to win the primary and defeat Rogers in November.

“As we enter the final month of the primaries, I am excited to continue telling Michiganders why I am the strongest Democrat to beat Mike Rogers this November, cut costs, protect manufacturing jobs, and stand up to Trump’s abuses of power,” he added.

While running for the nomination, Stevens was supported by millions in super PAC spending, including big money from pro-Israel groups.

In his statement, El-Sayed praised McMorrow for having the “courage” to challenge what he described as a rigged political system and accused Democratic Party insiders of spending millions to influence the primaries. Although he did not name specific groups, his remarks appeared to include references to corporate PACs and party leaders like Schumer.

He then invited McMorrow’s supporters to join his progressive movement to fight big money in politics and defeat the political establishment.

“Throughout this campaign, Senator McMorrow showed what it is like to fight against politics that rigs the system against so many of us. Although we have policy disagreements, I have never questioned whether Senator McMorrow would fight for a better America for my daughters and my daughters,” she said.

“The same party insiders that he had the courage to challenge were bullying anyone who opposed their chosen candidate. After spending $30 million to strangle Senator McMorrow and me, they are now spending even more to attack me. It’s everything we oppose.”

“I call on supporters to join our movement to oppose money in politics, put money back in pockets, and pass Medicare for All. We cannot let the establishment decide our candidate for us.”

El-Sayed, who will make history as the country’s first Muslim senator if elected, is an epidemiologist who unsuccessfully ran for governor as a rebel candidate in 2018. He made support for “Medicare for All” a key component of his campaign.

El-Sayed also calls for the abolition of ICE, and he is a vocal critic of Israel’s war with Hamas. He described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide” against Palestinians. El-Sayed, who served as a top surrogate in Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, also vowed not to accept PAC donations.

Schumer and the party establishment see Stevens as more electable than El-Sayed, who has sparked controversy with his past comments. They worry that El-Sayed, as the party’s nominee, would jeopardize his Democratic-controlled Senate seat by pushing the party too far to the left in a state where the President is in office. Donald Trump two years ago it had moved up just over one percent.
