Man accused of raping his own daughter and granddaughter | World | News
Police are investigating an incest case in which a man is alleged to have not only fathered his own grandchild but then impregnated the child. The 50-year-old suspect, from Brazil’s Apurinão ethnic group, was detained on Wednesday, May 20, on suspicion of raping children.
The case occurred in the Bacuri Indigenous community near Tapauá, deep in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.
According to authorities, the 12-year-old victim is both the man’s daughter and granddaughter.
It is believed that her mother, now 33, was raped repeatedly by her own father over the years, and that the 12-year-old child was born as a result of this abuse.
Police only became aware of the case after a local Indigenous medical team insisted that the girl, who was six months pregnant, seek medical attention.
The suspect was hiding her from both healthcare professionals and other family members, keeping her in isolation and denying her access to education.
Following the allegations, the police launched an operation to capture the person. He initially escaped but was later detained.
Lieutenant Colonel Castro Alves told local media: “For several days, intensive searches and operations were carried out to trace the person.
“After a night of careful planning, security and intelligence surveillance, the suspect was eventually arrested.”
The 12-year-old child gave birth in Beruri. Both the mother and the baby are said to be in stable condition and the girl, who is the suspect’s daughter, is currently under the care of her mother.
Inspector Jailton Santos said: “This is a horrific case. For years this man repeatedly raped his own daughter in that indigenous community. She is now 33 years old.”
“She gave birth to a daughter as a result of abuse. The child lived with her grandmother in the neighborhood until her grandmother died about two years ago.
“Following her death, the man took the girl, isolated her from the rest of the family, and began living with her as his wife.”
The man is expected to appear before a judge for a custody hearing.
He is under investigation for rape of a child or vulnerable person (in respect of both his daughter and grandson), as well as false imprisonment and neglect of the child’s education.
