Man and woman charged over Sheffield bystander shooting | UK news

A man and a woman have been charged over the shooting death of a 30-year-old woman outside a bar in Sheffield in the early hours of the bank holiday Monday.

Shanice Brookes was shot near the One Four One bar on West Street shortly before 2.45am on Monday. Detectives described him as “just an innocent bystander.”

Jemele Rhone, 30, of Sheffield, has been charged with murder, possession of a firearm and possession of criminal property, South Yorkshire police said on Friday.

Deiryen Dyce, 32, also from Sheffield, was charged with assisting an offender, possession of ammunition, possession of drugs with intent to supply, possession of drugs and possession of criminal property.

Both suspects were detained and will appear at Sheffield magistrates’ court on Friday.

The 30-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder, was released shortly after the shooting and is no longer being treated as a suspect.

Senior investigating officer DCI Andy Knowles said: “Shanice was a completely innocent bystander who should have been able to enjoy a night out in our city without fear of not returning home safely.

“Shanice’s family, including her young son, now face the reality that they will never see her again. They are forced to grieve the unimaginable loss of their beloved daughter, friend and mother in the most tragic circumstances. Our thoughts remain with them.”

“From the beginning of this investigation, our priority has been clear: providing answers to Shanice’s loved ones. Today’s development is an important step in our commitment to do that.”

Jonathan Storer, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We would like to remind all those concerned that the proceedings against the defendants are active and they are entitled to a fair trial. It is vital that there is no news, commentary or sharing of information online that could prejudice these proceedings in any way.”
