Man shot and charged after allegedly confronting police with rifle

A gunman who allegedly confronted police with a rifle before being shot by officers during a fight at a property south of Brisbane on Friday night has been charged with a string of offences.
Police attended the Caswell Road property in Woodhill, 12 kilometers north of Beaudesert, at around 9pm after someone inside the property requested a welfare check, Inspector Emma Reilly said on Saturday.
The 41-year-old man had multiple stab wounds before police arrived. Police are investigating whether the injuries were self-inflicted or inflicted by someone else, Reilly said.
He allegedly charged officers with a rifle upon arrival and was shot before officers could administer emergency first aid, police said in an update Sunday morning.
The man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition where he remained in police custody. No one else was injured.
The man has been charged with two counts of serious assault on police while armed with a gun, police said on Sunday morning.
He is also charged with unlawful possession of a class A weapon and breaching a police protection order. He will appear at Beenleigh Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The welfare check was not flagged as high risk, Reilly said.
“This incident underscores the inherent risk our police face every day as they serve the community,” he said.
“Our officers come to protect Queensland and often put themselves in danger.
“Obviously, this is a traumatic time for those officers and those who were there and witnessed the incident. Our thoughts are with them all.”
A crime scene has been declared and Ethical Standards Command will investigate the incident.
