Maoist with ₹10-lakh bounty surrenders before Kolkata Police

The Maoist women cadre, named Sakuntala and Pushpa, surrendered before the Kolkata Police. He surrendered on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with a gun and 40 bullets, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand said.
“He is a native of Mechua in Belpahari, Jhargram district. He was a member of CPI Maoist Party, general committee of Dalma Squad… He had joined as a cultural member in 2001,” Mr. Nand said.

Although he belonged to Belpahari, he was mostly serving in the Jharkhand region.
The senior official also added that there was a reward of ₹10 lakh for Ms. Sakuntala in Jharkhand. There are around four cases against him in West Bengal and neighboring states as well.
He joined the Maoist movement at an early age when he was in 5th grade and has been active in Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar since then. Mr. Nand also added that Sakuntala decided to abandon the arms struggle and return to normal life.
The Maoist woman who surrendered said that she wanted to return to normal life and called on her teammates to surrender like her.
“I realized that our movement was not in the right place at the moment and could not move forward, so I decided to surrender. The government assured me that I could return to normal life and undergo rehabilitation,” Ms Sakuntala said.
